The path and the vision
The knowing of the connectedness to all of creation animates me to create pathways of experience, which will open this connection further.
I feel deeply touched by the archaic sounds of Monochords and Gongs which lead me to develp and build instruments of this nature. From the process of many years of continued development and application of the sounds of my instruments were born unique and amazing musical beings.
The origin of the Monochord is to be found with the ancient Pythagoraen culture, which recognized in sound the sensory expression of the natural order of the universe. The Monochord was seen as a physical measuring instrument, whereby one could show the proportions and the order of the intervals, which in turn were seen as the order and creation principals of the cosmos.
In the making of the Gongs I am again and again impressed how this metal disc can through a powerful forging process become a highly sensitive vibrational energy structure, expressing through its sound. Every hammer beat of the smith will be impressed into the unique fabric of sound of each individual Gong.
I create Gongs whose characteristic sounds could represent the counterpart of order. They could be seen as the invoker of the “Gods”, or the expression of the element of fire, destruction or transformation.
I use the sounds of my Instruments and the Gongs of Asian cultures in concert, sound journeys and for experiencing the deeper inner self in therapeutical settings. The archaic depth of such sounds opens the experience of deep inner spaces.
The concerts therefore quite naturally lead into a kind of ceremony or ritual in its original meaning. The listening, the experiencing human being is in its center.
The use of these sounds in the self-discovery process, the development of these instruments and my music complete, compliment and inspire eachother in a very natural fashion. They illuminate my work from different perspecitves. In this creative field new insights are constantly born about the nature and effects of sound as well as my own being.
In my Instrument building courses we construct Monochords and Gongs. The different working processes of forging the Gongs leads us through the archaic powers of the elements, which are expressed in the unique sound of each instrument. Integrated into this sound is the story and process of its creation and a big part of the story of its creator (smith) as well. To make music from sounds is a creating process.
